The Santa Cruz Shredder is the grinder that vaporizer reviewers recommend again and again, and this is its classic form: grind chamber, storage chamber, and a pollen chamber under a precision screen, in a 54 mm body that goes with you every day. It has been made in Santa Cruz, California since 2007 and is consistently rated among the best grinders ever built.
The patented tooth design is what makes this grinder so well suited to a vaporizer. The 27 flat-topped teeth (15 in the body, 12 in the lid) cut the herb in several directions instead of mashing it, and the result is a fluffy, even grind that exposes far more surface area to hot air. You get a more complete extraction from every load, the trichomes stay intact, and half a gram of herb is fully ground in two or three turns of the lid.
Below the grind chamber, ground herb falls into storage, and a T304 stainless steel screen sifts fine pollen into the bottom chamber, where it gradually builds up as a bonus. Santa Cruz weaves the screen with a finer mesh, measured in microns, than most grinders use, so what collects down there is pollen rather than dust, and the screen is stretched as tight as a drum skin, so it never warps or comes loose. The floor of the pollen chamber is rounded for easy scooping, a triangular kief scraper stores inside it, and the screen section can be unscrewed completely if you prefer to use the grinder as a shorter unit without a screen.
The body is machined from medical-grade, ultrasonically cleansed anodised aluminium. A friction ring and a unique thread pattern keep the two halves from sticking or from being screwed on at an angle, a rare earth magnet keeps the lid shut while you carry the grinder in your pocket, and the deeply knurled grip needs so little force that the brand is a long-standing favourite of people with hand or wrist pain.
If you never plan to collect pollen, the simpler 2-piece Grinder (54mm) grinds exactly the same way with fewer parts. If you prepare larger amounts at once, the wider 4-piece Grinder (70mm) is easier to turn and holds more. Both are sold separately.
