Who is the Volcano Classic for?

The Volcano Classic is the vaporizer that defined the category. Storz & Bickel have been making it in Germany since 2000, and in 2026 it remains one of the highest-rated desktop vaporizers available. Its fan fills balloons for you, so you inhale at your own pace with zero effort and no technique to learn.

It plugs into a wall outlet, so it stays in one spot. The fan is audible during balloon fills, which is worth knowing if your space is quiet. The Classic fits right in on a countertop or side table. Fill a balloon for a relaxed evening, or fill several and pass them around with friends.

Owners routinely report 15 to 20 years of daily use without a single repair, making the Classic one of the safest long-term purchases you can make in this price range.

Design and build

The Volcano Classic has a metal cone shape that has barely changed since its launch. It measures roughly 18 cm tall with a 20 cm diameter, weighs about 1.6 kg, and sits firmly on any flat surface.

Three physical controls handle everything: a power switch, a temperature dial, and a fan switch. A small indicator light in the centre turns off when the vaporizer reaches the target temperature. There is no display, no app, and no Bluetooth.

The power cord is about 180 cm long and permanently attached. You will need a wall socket within reach of wherever you place the vape.

Pure convection heating

The Volcano Classic uses pure convection heating. A built-in air pump pushes hot air up through the herbs, extracting active compounds without any direct contact with a hot surface. This preserves the natural flavour and active compounds in your herbs.

The vaporizer reaches temperature in about two minutes from a cold start. For the best first balloon of the session, let the system warm for another minute or two so everything is evenly heated.

Hands-free balloon delivery

The built-in fan pushes vapour into food-safe Easy Valve balloons. Once a balloon is full, you detach it from the filling chamber and inhale whenever you like. There is no draw resistance at all because the balloon collects the vapour for you.

Each balloon has a built-in valve inside the orange connector. When you detach a filled balloon, the valve seals the vapour inside. To inhale, push the black mouthpiece into the orange connector. It presses against the valve and opens it. Release the pressure, and the valve closes on its own. The vapour stays fresh inside the balloon for roughly 10 minutes.

The box includes four standard balloons with the bag permanently attached to the orange connector, plus one with a removable adapter ring. When a standard balloon wears out, you replace the whole balloon. The adapter balloon lets you slide off worn balloon material and attach a fresh bag from a Balloon Roll (sold separately), which is more economical long-term.

Filled balloons can be passed around a group, and you can fill a balloon only partway for a lighter solo session. For larger sessions, XL balloons (sold separately) hold more vapour and cool it further before you inhale.

An Obsidian glass bubbler (sold separately) sits between the filling chamber and the balloon, adding water filtration that smooths, cools, and humidifies the vapour, reducing the throat dryness that some users notice during longer sessions. It is one of the most popular upgrades among Volcano owners.

Temperature control

The analogue dial offers nine temperature settings from 130°C to 230°C:

  • Setting 1: 130°C
  • Setting 2: 142°C
  • Setting 3: 154°C
  • Setting 4: 166°C
  • Setting 5: 178°C
  • Setting 6: 190°C
  • Setting 7: 202°C
  • Setting 8: 214°C
  • Setting 9: 226°C

The actual temperature may vary by about ±5°C from the indicated value due to the natural heating cycle.

Lower temperatures bring out more flavour and terpenes. Higher temperatures extract more material in fewer balloon fills. A common approach is to start around setting 5 or 6 for the first balloon, then step up to 7 or 8 for subsequent fills from the same load.

Chamber and loading

The ceramic-coated filling chamber holds approximately 0.6 g of ground herbs, or up to about 1 g when packed more tightly. The chamber sits on top of the heater and lifts straight off for reloading.

Two stainless steel screens sit inside the chamber to keep herbs in place and filter the airflow. The Volcano Classic is designed for ground herbs only, not concentrates or extracts.

You can add a Dosing Capsule Adapter (sold separately) to use S&B dosing capsules in the Classic. Each capsule holds about 0.15 g. The adapter also works without capsules, reducing the chamber to about 0.25 g. Smaller loads actually extract more evenly because the heat concentrates around the herbs instead of filling a half-empty chamber.

Filling capsules ahead of time lets you standardise your doses, switch between strains without cleaning, and prepare sessions for others. The chamber stays cleaner too, reducing how often you need a deep clean.

A magazine (sold separately) holds eight capsules ready to go, and a filling kit loads 40 capsules at once. We offer a 25% discount on all accessories when you buy a vaporizer here at MagicVaporizers.

How to use the Volcano Classic

The Volcano Classic is simple to use. Here is how a typical session works:

  1. Loading: Grind your herbs and spread them evenly across the bottom screen. Fill loosely. A light, even layer lets hot air flow through all the material.
  2. Heating: Turn on the power switch and set the temperature. Place the filled chamber on the heater while it warms up. The indicator light turns off when the target temperature is reached, which takes about two minutes.
  3. Filling: Remove the mouthpiece from the balloon, then attach the balloon to the filling chamber. Turn on the fan switch and let the balloon fill. Turn off the fan before it overfills.
  4. Inhaling: Detach the filled balloon and click the mouthpiece back into the orange valve. Press your lips to the mouthpiece and draw slowly. Release, and the valve reseals on its own.
  5. Refilling: Reattach the balloon to the filling chamber and turn on the fan for another fill from the same load. Repeat until the flavour fades. Check the herbs between fills; they should look evenly brown when spent.
  6. Finishing: Once the herbs are spent, empty the filling chamber and give it a quick brush with the cleaning brush. Save the leftover material (ABV) for cooking or baking, or discard it.

The exposed metal top of the filling chamber gets hot during use, but you can safely grip the plastic housing to lift it off. The Volcano Classic does not have an auto shut-off, so remember to switch it off when you finish.

Herb efficiency

Pure convection heating extracts thoroughly without burning. A typical load of 0.5 to 1 g fills three to five balloons before it is spent, and the herbs come out evenly brown with no ash.

The extracted herbs, often called ABV (already been vaped), still contain active compounds. Many owners collect ABV over time and use it to infuse butter for baking, mix into oil, or fill capsules.

Built to last

The Volcano Classic has been in continuous production since 2000 and is still manufactured by hand in Germany. The analogue design has fewer parts that can fail than any digital alternative: a physical dial, two switches, and nothing else.

There is no touchscreen, no battery, and no software to update. The design has remained largely unchanged for over 25 years, which says a lot about how well it works.

Cleaning and maintenance

After each session, give the filling chamber a quick brush with the included cleaning brush to keep the screens clear.

For a deeper clean, take the chamber apart and soak the metal parts in isopropyl alcohol for about 30 minutes. Clean plastic parts under hot water instead. Replace balloons roughly every 20 fills for the freshest flavour.

The most effective approach is to rotate between two or three filling chambers. When one needs cleaning, set it aside and put a fresh chamber on the vaporizer. Batch-clean the dirty chambers later. Extra filling chambers and Balloons (6-pack) (both sold separately) make this rotation easy to keep up.

Volcano Classic vs Volcano Hybrid

The Volcano Hybrid adds a whip for direct inhalation, a touchscreen, and app control. It heats up in about 40 seconds versus roughly two minutes on the Classic, and its hybrid heating extracts more material per balloon fill.

The Volcano Classic offers pure convection and analogue simplicity at a lower price. Its physical dial and two switches have been enough for over 25 years, and the design has barely changed in that time.

If simple controls and pure convection flavour matter more to you than speed and versatility, the Classic is the better pick.

Volcano Classic vs Arizer Extreme Q

The Arizer Extreme Q offers both balloon and whip delivery, includes a remote control, and costs significantly less. It delivers good performance and covers a wide temperature range.

The Volcano Classic fills balloons with a more powerful built-in pump, producing faster and more consistent fills. The Easy Valve system seals each balloon automatically, so there is nothing to hold shut or clamp.

For balloon-focused sessions where fill speed and build quality are the priority, the Classic justifies its higher price.

Volcano Classic vs Veazy

The Veazy is Storz & Bickel's smallest portable, weighing just 134 g with hybrid heating and one-button control. It shares the same dosing capsule ecosystem as the Classic, so your capsules work in both devices.

The Volcano Classic offers a much larger chamber, hands-free balloon filling, and zero draw resistance. Mains power means consistent heat with no battery to manage, and a single load stretches across three to five balloons before it is spent.

Many owners pair a desktop Volcano with an S&B portable for travel. If you want something pocket-sized for when you leave the house and the Classic for home, the Veazy is the most compact option in the range.

Recommended Accessories

Right now we offer a 25% discount on all accessories when you buy any vaporizer here at MagicVaporizers. Here are some useful additions for the Volcano Classic.

Dosing Capsule Adapter: Connects the S&B capsule system to your Classic and doubles as a chamber reducer for more efficient solo sessions.

Dosing Capsules (40-pack): Forty reusable capsules. Pre-fill a batch and swap them in for quick, mess-free sessions.

Magazine with 8 Dosing Capsules: A compact case with eight capsules. Pre-fill them at home and swap in a fresh one whenever you need it.

Kit for Filling Dosing Capsules including 48 Capsules: Batch-fill 40 capsules at once with the included tray, grinder, and plunger.

Plunger for Dosing Capsules: Grips the capsule lid evenly so you can pop it on or off without bending the thin aluminium. Once the lids tighten after repeated heat cycles, this tool makes removal easy.

Balloons (6-pack): Six replacement balloons. Replace roughly every 20 fills for the freshest flavour.

XL Balloons (6-pack): Six larger balloons, great for sharing or longer solo sessions. The extra air volume also cools the vapour more before you inhale.

Balloon Roll (3 m): Three metres of replacement balloon material for the adapter balloon. Cut to your preferred length for a more economical alternative to pre-made balloons.

Filling Chamber: The single best maintenance purchase for the Volcano Classic. Keep two or three in rotation so a clean chamber is always ready when you need one.

Starter Set: Five balloons, a filling chamber, clips, and screens bundled together. Saves you from ordering each part separately.

Wear & Tear Set: Replacement clips, seal rings, screens, and a brush to renew your filling chamber.

Screens (6-pack): Six stainless steel replacement screens. Screens need regular replacement to maintain good airflow.

Fine Mesh Screens (6-pack): Six finer screens that catch smaller particles for those who prefer a very fine grind.

Obsidian Glass Bubbler by Magma Industries: Sits between the filling chamber and balloon. Cools, humidifies, and smooths the vapour, reducing throat dryness during longer sessions.

Dust Cap: Covers the heater between sessions to keep dust, pet hair, and debris off the heating element.
