The Volcano Hybrid is Storz & Bickel's flagship desktop vaporizer, built in Germany and widely regarded as the benchmark for desktop performance. It delivers vapour two ways: through a balloon you detach and inhale at your own pace, and through a tube for direct draws.

It plugs into a power outlet and stays in one spot. The pump is audible during balloon fills, which is worth noting if you use it in a quiet room. You get precise temperature control, efficient extraction, and evenly vaped herbs you can reuse in cooking.

S&B has been building Volcanos by hand since 2000, and the Hybrid is the best one yet.

The Volcano Hybrid is built from stainless steel in Germany and meets strict quality and safety standards. It measures roughly 20 × 20 × 18 cm and weighs about 1.8 kg. It has a cone shape that sits on a wide base.

The Volcano platform has been in continuous production since 2000, and S&B backs every unit with post-warranty repair service from their workshop in Germany.

The front panel has a touchscreen with a digital temperature readout and four touch buttons for heat, airflow, and temperature. The power cord detaches from the back for easier storage.

The Volcano Hybrid uses hybrid heating that combines convection and conduction. Hot air flows through a spiral heating element and up through the herbs, while the ceramic-coated aluminium walls of the chamber transfer heat directly to the material. The combination works like cooking with both an oven and a hot pan at the same time.

This dual approach means full extraction in roughly 2 balloons instead of the 4 or 5 that a pure-convection desktop like the Volcano Classic typically needs. You get more from each fill, and the spent herbs come out evenly extracted.

The Hybrid is the only Volcano with both balloon and tube delivery. The internal pump fills a balloon in about 35 seconds. When you detach a filled balloon, a valve in the orange connector seals the vapour inside. There is no draw resistance at all because the balloon holds the vapour for you.

You can fill a balloon only partway for a lighter solo session.

Press your lips to the black mouthpiece and inhale. The mouthpiece opens the valve automatically. When you stop, the valve reseals on its own.

Three of the included balloons have the bag permanently attached to the orange connector. When one wears out, you replace the whole balloon. The fourth has an adapter ring that lets you slide off worn material and attach a fresh bag from a Balloon Roll (sold separately). This is the more economical way to keep fresh balloons on hand.

Balloon vapour tastes best within the first few minutes after filling. The flavour fades after roughly 10 minutes.

The tube pushes onto the same connection point and rotates 360 degrees. Switching between balloon and tube takes just a few seconds.

You can draw on your own breath or turn on the fan for assisted airflow. The fan pushes vapour directly to you with no effort on your part, which is especially helpful for users with limited lung capacity.

An Obsidian glass bubbler (sold separately) fits between the filling chamber and your balloon or tube. It adds water filtration that smooths, cools, and humidifies the vapour, reducing the throat dryness that some users notice during longer sessions. It is one of the most popular upgrades among Volcano owners.

The touchscreen lets you set any temperature from 40°C to 230°C in single-degree steps. Four touch buttons control heat, airflow, and temperature.

Lower temperatures around 180°C to 200°C preserve terpenes and lighter flavour compounds. Above 200°C, the Hybrid extracts more material in fewer draws at the cost of a warmer, more robust vapour. You can start low and step up the temperature mid-session to get the full range from a single load.

The Volcano Hybrid connects to the S&B app over Bluetooth. The app is available natively on Android. iPhone users access the same features through the S&B Web App, which runs in your browser. Features include temperature presets, Workflows for multi-step temperature routines, and Iterations for extended tube sessions with gradual temperature changes.

The Hybrid also has a built-in auto shut-off that powers it down after 30 minutes by default. The app lets you adjust this timer to suit your session length.

When the vape reaches its target temperature, the pump pulses briefly as an audible signal. If you prefer a silent start, the app lets you turn this off.

The filling chamber holds approximately 0.6 g of ground herbs, or up to about 1 g when packed more tightly. It locks onto the heater with a half-turn twist. The chamber is ceramic-coated aluminium with stainless steel screens.

For most solo sessions, 0.6 g is more material than you need. A dosing capsule adapter (sold separately) reduces the chamber to about 0.25 g or a single dosing capsule (approximately 0.15 g each). Smaller loads actually extract more evenly because the heat concentrates around the herbs instead of filling a half-empty chamber.

The adapter also lets the Hybrid use the same aluminium capsules found across the full S&B portable range.

Filling capsules ahead of time lets you standardise your doses, switch between strains without cleaning, and prepare sessions for others. The chamber stays cleaner too, reducing how often you need a deep clean.

The Volcano Hybrid is designed for ground herbs only. If concentrates are your main interest, a dedicated device like the Puffco Peak Pro is a better fit.

The Volcano Hybrid is simple to use. Here is how a typical session goes:

1. Load: Grind your herbs and fill the chamber. Spread them evenly so the bottom screen is fully covered, and avoid packing too tightly.
2. Lock: Place the chamber onto the heater and twist a half-turn to lock it.
3. Heat: Press the Heat button and set your temperature. The vaporizer reaches 180°C in roughly 40 seconds. When it reaches the target, the pump pulses briefly to let you know.
4. Fill a balloon: Remove the mouthpiece from a balloon, attach the balloon to the filling chamber, and press the Air button. The pump fills a standard balloon in about 35 seconds. Detach the balloon and click the mouthpiece back into the orange valve to inhale.
5. Or use the tube: Attach the tube instead and draw through the mouthpiece. Turn on the fan for assisted airflow, or draw on your own breath.
6. Finish: Remove the chamber from the base when done. The exposed metal top will be hot, so grip the plastic housing to lift it off. Open the chamber, empty the spent herbs, and give the screens a quick brush. Save the ABV for later use or discard it.

Hybrid heating extracts more material per balloon than pure-convection desktops. Most bowls finish in roughly 2 balloons, and the spent herbs come out evenly brown with no ash, confirming they have been vaped rather than burned.

The spent herbs, often called ABV (already been vaped), still hold active compounds. Many owners save ABV and use it to infuse butter for brownies, blend into oil, or pack into capsules.

The most effective way to maintain the Volcano Hybrid is to rotate between multiple filling chambers. When one needs cleaning, set it aside and put a fresh chamber on the vaporizer.

For a deeper clean, take the chamber apart and soak the metal parts in isopropyl alcohol for about 30 minutes. Clean plastic parts under hot water instead. Two or three extra filling chambers make this rotation easy to keep up, and dosing capsules reduce how often you need a deep clean.

Replace balloons roughly every 20 fills for the freshest flavour. Pick up a Balloons (6-pack) for ready replacements, or a Balloon Roll for 3 metres of material you cut to any length.

The tube's silicone absorbs flavour over time and is difficult to clean thoroughly. The easiest approach is to replace it when the taste changes. A Tube Set (3 x 1 m) gives you three fresh tubes ready to swap in.

A Dust Cap covers the heater between sessions to keep dust and debris off the heating element.

The Volcano Classic has been refined continuously since 2000 and remains one of the most reliable desktop vaporizers ever made. It uses pure convection heating with a numbered dial for temperature control and delivers vapour through balloons only.

The Hybrid heats up in 40 seconds versus several minutes on the Classic. It adds tube delivery, a digital touchscreen, and hybrid heating that extracts a full bowl in roughly 2 balloons instead of 4 or 5. The filling chamber twist-locks into place, and the power cord detaches for tidier storage and transport.

If you prefer pure convection character and only need balloons, the Classic is a proven, more affordable option. The Hybrid is the stronger pick when you want both delivery methods, faster heat-up, and more efficient extraction.

The Arizer XQ2 is a desktop vaporizer with both balloon and tube delivery at roughly a third of the price. It features an all-glass vapour path for clean flavour and includes a physical remote control.

The Volcano Hybrid fills balloons significantly faster and extracts a full bowl more completely in fewer balloons. The S&B dosing capsule ecosystem adds a quick-swap workflow that the XQ2 does not offer.

If flavour purity at low temperatures is your top priority and budget is a factor, the XQ2 is a capable desktop. The Hybrid pulls ahead on extraction speed, session efficiency, and the convenience of a capsule-based system.
