Why choose a desktop vaporizer?
A desktop vaporizer, also called a stationary vaporizer, sits on your table and runs from the mains. Without a battery to carry, there is room for powerful heating, generous chambers and long sessions.
Your herbs are heated, not burned: a cleaner taste, less smell, and your material goes further. For days out, see our portable vaporizers; for the whole range, our dry herb vaporizers.
Best desktop vaporizers: our picks
I use a vaporizer every day myself, at home and on the golf course. Running the shop, I see which models customers love, which ones come back, and which still work years later. These are the desktop vaporizers I'd recommend to a friend.
I update these picks every 3 months.

How to choose a desktop vaporizer
Six things decide which desktop vaporizer fits you. Here is what to compare, and how our picks differ.
Balloon or tube
- Balloon: the vaporizer fills a valve balloon; detach it, inhale at your own pace or pass it round, as with the Volcano Hybrid or Volcano Classic.
- Tube (whip): draw straight from the vaporizer through a hose. The Volcano Hybrid and Arizer XQ2 include both systems.
- Cooling coil: the hand-held Plenty draws through a stainless steel coil.
Heating method
- Convection: hot air through the herbs, clean flavour, as in the Volcano Classic and Arizer XQ2.
- Hybrid: convection and conduction at once. The Volcano Hybrid and Plenty work this way.
Heat-up time
- Under a minute: the Volcano Hybrid is ready in 40 seconds, while you grind your herbs.
- A few minutes: switch it on first, then settle in, as with the Plenty (3 to 4 minutes) or the Volcano Classic (about 5 minutes).
- Longest warm-up: the Arizer XQ2 needs 2 minutes, plus 3 to 5 minutes for the glass, so it suits a planned session.
Temperature control
- Exact degrees: set the temperature you like and return to it every time. The Volcano Hybrid touchscreen covers 40 to 230 °C, the Arizer XQ2 remote 50 to 260 °C.
- Simple settings: a dial or a few steps, nothing to program. Nine settings on the Volcano Classic (130 to 230 °C), seven on the Plenty (130 to 202 °C).
Power
All four picks plug into the mains, so there is no battery to charge or wear out. That leaves room for powerful heating and long sessions without stopping.
Warranty
- Three years of cover: long enough to see daily use through, as on the Volcano Classic and Plenty.
- Two plus one: the Volcano Hybrid gives two years, plus a third when you register.
- Lifetime on the heater: the Arizer XQ2 covers its heating element for life, with two years on the electronics.

The Volcano Hybrid in tube mode: balloon and tube both included, ready in 40 seconds.
Five habits that get more from a desktop vaporizer
- Grind medium-fine: so the heat reaches all of it evenly.
- Wait for full temperature: the first fill tastes better from an evenly hot chamber.
- Detach the balloon: then inhale at your own pace or share it.
- Clean chamber, screens and tubes regularly: flavour and airflow stay like new.
- Replace balloons in good time: spare parts are in our accessories section.
