What you get for less
A cheap vaporizer heats your herbs. It never burns them. Two of our three picks let you set the exact temperature. You get a cleaner taste, less smell, and your herbs go further.
What costs extra is battery life, build quality and comfort. The basic principle is the same, so a budget dry herb vaporizer is a sensible place to start.
Best cheap vaporizers: our picks
I use a vaporizer every day myself, at home and on the golf course. Running the shop, I see which models customers love, which ones come back, and which still work years later. These are the cheap vaporizers I'd recommend to a friend.
I update these picks every 3 months.

How to choose a cheap vaporizer
Five things decide how good a cheap vaporizer is. Here is what to look for, and how our picks compare.
Heating method
- Conduction: heats the herbs through the chamber wall. Simple, and you stir once halfway, as in the XMax Starry V4 or Flowermate Aura.
- Convection: blows hot air through the herbs for a cleaner taste, as in the XMax V4 Pro and Wolkenkraft FX Mini Ultra.
- Heated balls: the Tempest 2 Slim draws air through a cap of hot balls, so it is convection-heavy.
Temperature control
- Look for: degree-by-degree control or several presets.
- Lower settings: more flavour. Higher settings: denser vapour.
- Range: the XMax V4 Pro and Wolkenkraft FX Mini Ultra cover 100 to 220 °C.
- No readout: the Tempest 2 Slim shows its heat on a visual gauge instead.
Heat-up time
- Ready almost straight away: the XMax V4 Pro takes about 11 seconds, good for a quick draw.
- Under half a minute: about as long as it takes to grind your herbs; the Wolkenkraft FX Mini Ultra takes 25 seconds.
- About 40 seconds: the Tempest 2 Slim is ready in about 40 seconds on an induction heater.
Battery
- Replaceable 18650 battery: when the cell wears out, you swap it and carry on, which adds years of life. The XMax V4 Pro takes one.
- No battery at all: the Tempest 2 Slim, but you need a heater or a torch.
Warranty
- Five years: long enough to cover daily use for years, as on the Wolkenkraft FX Mini Ultra.
- One year: the XMax V4 Pro and Tempest 2 Slim give shorter cover. The XMax has a swappable battery, and the Slim has no electronics to fail.

The XMax V4 Pro in silver and black: convection heating, ready in about 11 seconds.
Five habits that get more from a cheap vaporizer
- Grind medium-fine: evenly ground herbs vaporise evenly.
- Pack loosely: air must get through the chamber.
- Stir conduction models: once, halfway through the session.
- Keep it clean: brush the chamber after each session, isopropyl alcohol for the mouthpiece.
- Look after the battery: don't run it completely flat every time.
